Brisbane city has never looked so good, with many infrastructure building projects going on, things are looking up for the River City pre-Olympics. One of the most popular precincts has to be the Howard Smith Wharves. The location is fab, we met friends who live at Newstead and they regularly enjoy the boardwalk to get to and from HSW.
Loads of people walking, running, bike riding. I can remember the 2010 floods, being told for our safety to leave the city and go home. I vividly remember being on the bus and thinking “will my city ever be the same” This was a scary time for many, and it has taken Brisbane some time to get back on the road to recovery, but the Aussie spirit is strong, and our city and her people did rebuild. Forward to 2023 as I take my leisurely walk along the boardwalk, one would never know the heartache that came from these devastating floods.
Directly under the Story Bridge, Howard Smith Wharves has numerous Restaurants, Cafes, Bars and Event Spaces. Playgrounds for children, so much to keep them amused and busy. This is a very carefully curated entertainment destination with the mindset of bringing the community together.
Built in the 1930’s the wharves stood silent and derelict for many years, reimagined this whole area has been brought back to life and is now a busy, thriving precinct which delights locals and visitors alike.
We enjoyed a beer at Felons Brewing Co, a working brewery before heading to dine at Yoko for some fine Japanese fare. Loved the retro vibe of the décor, tasty bar snacks, hibachi charcoal grill cuisine washed down with the perfect cocktail partner made for a great night out.
If only we had somewhere close by to stay for the night. Oh, wait did I forget to tell you about the most amazing accommodation experience we had? Crystalbrook Vincent …. Hello how seriously Gorge is this this hotel! Originally opened by Australian artist Vincent Fantauzzo (his incredible artwork adorns the hallways, rooms and other public areas of the hotel). The property came to the Crystalbrook Group in 2021.
The hotel sits proudly on the Howard Smith Wharves overlooking Brisbane’s Story Bridge. At 6 stories high with 166 suites and rooms the colour scheme is plush, the king bed uber comfy, roomy layout with desk for working, lounge and the latest mod cons. We loved the sustainability route like all Crystalbrooks have taken – no single use plastic, 100% waste free bathroom accessories, cashless point of sale. Fiume offered great views of the Brisbane skyline day or night, and many were enjoying the infinity pool and outdoor bar when we first arrived. Enjoyed breakfast in Mews and the staff were just lovely here.
Would stay here again.
