Mumbai – India

If you have done all the usual touristy things in Mumbai like;
The Gateway of India, Leopold Café & Bar, Global Vipassanda Pagoda, Nariman Point, Shopping in Bandra, Marine Drive
Then you might enjoy my next read on a few different places I saw on my quick work trip to Mumbai.

Ohh my, St Regis Mumbai ….. I think I am in heaven!
Truly cannot wait to come back and stay here.
Immaculately clean rooms, incredible customer service …. Hello your own butler! I do not think I have ever stayed somewhere so luxurious. This 5 star property is 5 star everything. Located in Lower Parel this property is one the tallest buildings in Mumbai.
Probably the best breakfast experience ever in Seven Kitchens, such fresh ingredients, so many mouth-watering food stations, incredibly talented Chefs and friendly staff. I must be honest and say the spa experience at Kumarakom was far more superior though.

This was my second visit back to Mumbai and it never disappoints. Up until 1996 Mumbai was known as Bombay and is located on the west coast of India. Mumbai is the capital city of the Maharashtra state. On my last visit I took a day trip to Elephanta Island which was fascinating spending the day walking in and out of the ancient cave temples that were dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva. Lots of steps, walking and very cheeky Monkeys but a day I would recommend. You can book a guide but we just went on our own and felt very comfortable.

With not much time to get out and about as I was in town for business I did get the chance to drive by the 160 year old outdoor laundry in Dhobi Ghat. 100’s upon 100’s of washers who are known as Dhobis work here cleaning clothes, linen sent from homes, hotels and hospitals. This is a very labour intensive process where washing is done by hand then beaten on a flogging stone before being rung out and hung up to dry. Reminded me of growing up in Bundaberg, Mum had this huge pot outside and would boil the sheets, towels, clothes with a fire underneath. We thought our family was so fancy pants when we got a manual wringer that could wind everything through it and get all the excess water out of our laundry items. I do not remember us having a washing machine, maybe that’s what the pot was for.

If you have the time, grab a driver and take a ride in an auto Rickshaw, these black and yellow metered vehicles became the way to get around when in 2003 cycle or pulled rickshaw were banned in the capital. Due to the large number of riskshaws now in Mumbai though some drivers can refuse a fare as they can pick and choose which ride, they want to carry.
