A day at Sea World – Gold Coast

Having not visited Sea World in quite a few years today’s visit was a delightful surprise. Of course the weather today was outstanding, 17 – 25 degrees with a nice breeze and sunny skies we donned our sunscreen, hats, sunglasses and took our refillable water bottles for a day out.

Not going on the weekend was certainly a bonus as there were no large queues, even though there were a lot of people in the park. It was great to see so many families, couples, friends, tour groups all enjoying themselves.

First stop was Sea Jellies Illuminated – not only do you get to enjoy seeing these creatures with no brain or skeletal system weird right? The information is really interesting added to this Sea World have formed a partnership with Surf Life Saving Queensland & Griffith University to set up a fully functional operating laboratory to undertake research of Sea Jellies. Totally loved the interactive exhibit and of course seeing so many sea jellies illuminated.

Next it was off to Polar Bear Shores to meet little Mishka, super cute at over 12 months now she was just adorable. Ray Reef another interactive exhibit, Rays reside in a large touch tank where you can observe them close up. So many different species of Rays cohabiting in the one environment.

Shark Bay is probably one of my favourite spots, I can watch for hours the many different Sharks, Fish, Rays and other creatures who inhabit the tropical reef lagoon.  Today for the very first time I also saw a large Sea Turtle which was a real highlight.

I really enjoyed my lunch at the Dockside Tavern, the view from upstairs looking out onto the Dolphin area is very relaxing. My Thai Beef Salad was very tasty served with just the right amount of dressing. I think from memory it was around $21, my travelling companion had the Fish & Chips which looked amazing and included in the $22 was your choice of a soft drink, beer or wine so that represented good value for money to us. That said there were loads of other food outlets in a much lower price bracket as well to choose from.

In terms of shows, we only had time to see the Seal Guardians which was a great way to educate everyone about recycling, rubbish going into our oceans and teaching in a fun and interactive way as audiences are encouraged to participate in the show as well.

Time for an ice cream for dessert before heading home. Next time would like to squeeze in a few more shows.

On the whole the layout of the park is good, ample trees for shade, green spaces to sit in and enjoy your lunch and I noticed how accessible most venues were offering inclusivity to all. There are so many more shows that clearly focus on the younger ones as well Turtle Power Show, Sponge Bob Square Pants and many more educational presentations and animal adventures to book (additional cost for these) water and land based.

Great day out and hope to come back again soon.
