Mt Barney Lodge – Scenic Rim Queensland Australia

Located 90 minutes from either the Gold Coast or Brisbane you will find Mt Barney Lodge, in the spectacular Scenic Rim. This privately owned property is at the base of Mt Barney, Queensland’s 4th highest mountain with an elevation of 1359 metres. Family owned, with ecotourism ideals in running an ethical and sustainable tourism business they promote minimal impact bushwalking, prefer no single use plastics on site so BYO water bottle to refill please, there is a no generators allowed rule in the campground to ensure wildlife and guests can absorb the atmosphere. Compost bins on site, wood supplied for campfires is from fallen trees on the property or local landowners and have Advanced Eco Tourism Australia accreditation as well as being leaders in Wilderness First Aid accreditation. This is the perfect place to get away and unwind.

This property offers all types of accommodation including:
Queenslander style homesteads – these can sleep from 4 up to 15 guests depending on the homestead you book and are fully self-contained with one bathroom each.
Rustic Cabins – includes a self-contained kitchen with bedding from 7 – 10 guests (single beds), no bathroom facilities in the cabins though you would need to use the amenities block for toilets & showers.
Deluxe Hybrid Caravans – there are currently two on site, perfect for a couple wanting a getaway. Has everything you need even your own toilet and shower (all in one), sleeping 2 guests.
Mountainview Camper Trailers – like the Deluxe Hybrid Caravans these Camper Trailers are already set up and ready for you to move in. Self-contained kitchenette and can sleep up to 4 with the amenities block nearby.
Campsites all with campfire facilities, freshwater creek frontage and glorious mountain views and again amenities block nearby.

As we are considering the Caravan lifestyle, we opted for the Deluxe Hybrid Caravan for a 2-night stay and was allocated the 13-foot Austrack Tanami. It had everything we needed, and this coming from a first time Caravaner. Loved that this vehicle is fully self-contained! Also loved the outdoor set up, we cooked using the Webber BBQ and Outdoor hot plate. All we needed to do was bring our own food, beverages, and esky however there was a fridge slide with fridge already set up.

As a first-time user of a combined shower and toilet I must be honest and say I am not fan of this at all and thus would have to consider a larger size vehicle that has a separate toilet and shower plus I felt the seating area inside was too small for my liking but hey it’s a personal preference, right? Lots of other great bells and whistles though on this Offroad Hybrid Caravan for sure with so much going for it.

The team at Mt Barney Lodge are friendly and welcoming. There is even a small fridge area at Reception for stocking your staples like bread, milk, juice, wine, gin, beer so Happy Days if you run out of anything. I love their ethos of stocking and supporting local community business’. They even have firewood for a one-night supply set up ready for you to use in your own campfire and if you need more you can always purchase more.

Loads to experience on site from walking/hiking, there are creeks, waterholes, and waterfalls to explore or book rock climbing, abseiling, navigation courses and guided walks in and around Mt Barney Lodge & Mt Barney National Park. Every school holiday the Lodge offers a Program just for the kids with families in mind which is lovely and from time to time an Indigenous Cultural emersion course from half to 3-day offerings with Yarriba Dreaming offering you the chance to connect with country.

The best part of us, no cell reception or wi-fi so we could totally disconnect, focus only on breathing in the fresh country air, reading, take a stroll, talking, eat, wander the properties grounds at our leisure, look at the millions of star in the night sky and just relax. In this fast-paced lifestyle we all lead these days we both really appreciated having this time out and reset.
